Artist Statment
The ocean is where my artistic process begins—it's both an influence and a partner. As a ceramic sculptor, my work exists at the intersection of art, ecology, and the ocean’s diverse tapestry of life. My creative process begins with the construction of sculptures designed for underwater submersion, serving as both artistic expressions and sustainable marine reefs. These pieces become habitats for aquatic organisms, transforming them into collaborative works with the ecosystem. I draw inspiration from the contrast between the ever-changing organic forms of marine growth and the stagnant, human-made structures on which they reside.
I translate this juxtaposition into sculptures by creating detailed marine textures and incorporating them onto vessels made from molds of industrially manufactured vases. These pieces reflect the nearly symbiotic collaboration between humans and nature I aspire to with my submerged ceramics.I also take inspiration from the unexpected resilience nature shows in reclaiming itself whilst enveloping marine debris with layers of life. These encrusted, discarded objects, whether sunken to the bottom of the ocean or floating at the surface, tell a story of human influence in nature. I represent this abstractly, as well as representationally capturing the fluidity and movement of marine life underwater with swirling forms that mirror the rhythm of the sea.
Through ceramics, I aim to create dialogue that bridges the gap between creativity and environmental responsibility, as well as inviting viewers to look beneath the surface to appreciate the beautiful and sometimes unapparent connection we share with our environment.
