This work focuses on the elegance and balance of two very different materials, stone and steel. Stone was one of the earliest sculpting materials and steel is one of the most recent. I have ventured in many quarries across the state, looking for unique pieces of discarded stone to carve. This particular stone was from a mine in Colorado. The smooth surface of the stone highlights its natural striations and “imperfections”. Unlike most industrial materials or even wild clays, there is no blending of materials to get a consistent result. Each stone is unique and each carved portion within that very stone is unique. These two pieces are carved from a single piece and the same light-colored vein can be seen in both of them. These sister pieces are reaching for each other while almost connecting, creating visual tension and an echo of their mutual conception. The steel bases resemble the scaffolding support so often seen in building infrastructure where stone and steel are used together.
