“Manganese/ Resin”, 2024, Georgia Wild Clay, Wood, Resin, Deer Bone Ash, 9” x 13” x 7”

This set of three pieces highlights the most unique wild clay in my collection. This purple wild clay was exceedingly difficult to source and was only accessible in small amounts. Although I have found thin layers in many locations, I found only found enough to actually process from a highway road cut. There was a slight variation in pigment found in the thin striations and I tried my best to separate them accordingly. These bands are pigmented with manganese and have likely been in these natural striations since the original decomposition of the parent rock. I preserve this natural process by creating pieces that reflect the quantity of each particular pigment. I created simple, elegant structures to support them and allow them to “reach” for each other. Each wooden structure is coated in a resin pigmented with deer bone ashes. This simple and consistent design brings emphasis back towards the pigment differences in the clay forms.
