Oak/ Plywood”, 2023, Plywood, Oak, Concrete, Rebar, Glass, 8” x 30” x 12”

This piece explores both the decorative and practical use of wood, glass, and concrete. The form is sculpted out of stacks of plywood with natural wood layered horizontally throughout. This natural oak is the remnants of a fallen tree behind my home and its limited quantity is a result of the majority of the trees decay. The tree held significance to me growing up and I am glad I was able to salvage some and give it a new life in this piece. I used the industrial plywood in the structure as a commentary on the commodification of these natural materials. The glued and carved plywood layers also give interesting movement throughout the piece, leading down towards the bases at its tips. The layers of glass reference back to the small amounts of natural salvaged wood. It serves a decorative purpose as opposed to the exposed essential rebar in the concrete.
